Costume Overview

There are two versions of this costume: a male version (pants) and a female version (skirt). Both versions come with ties striped in the house colors and sweaters with accent stripes around the wrist and waist that have the house colors.

http://gallery.emma-community.co.uk/displayimage.php?album=10&pos=3 <<Hermione 3/4 shot. Wears robe, shirt, tie, sweater, skirt, and tights.

http://blackforests.com/gallery/POAPromos/seamus << Seamus 1/2 shot. Wears robe pushed back, shirt, tie tied very short with tail tucked into sweater, sweater, and pants.

Robes

Research

http://blackforests.com/gallery/POAPromos/hermione1 << Hermione 1/2 shot. Shows the sleeve shape and the sleeve and hood lining. It appears that the red lines the entire robe sleeve, unlike the side linings which are only partial.

http://blackforests.com/gallery/POAPromos/harry_1 << Harry 1/2 shot. You can see on his left side (picture right) that the robe has folded back and the lining is exposed. Around his armpit you can see where the lining actually ends on the inside of the robe, it is only 6-8 inches wide and is invisibly hemmed to the robe fabric or to another, black lining.

http://www.emmaempire.net/en_emma.php?ewe=galleries&pid=3837&site=7#img << Goyle 1/2 shot. You can see the robe clasp very clearly in this shot; it's different from the PS/SS/COS ones. This one has a black button and a loop on the left side and another button on the right. To close you slip the loop over the right button.

You can see in this shot that the patch is applied to the robe; there is a definate border line that shows it is not embroidered directly on the robe itself. It's the same patch as the first two movies (see http://www.veritaserum.com/galleries/displayimage.php?album=random&cat=4&pos=-612), a quartered shield of red and gold, with a lion, and a helmet on top with a red and gold mantle and a scrolly bar at the bottom with the house name.

Shirt

Research

http://blackforests.com/gallery/POAPromos/draco2 << Draco headshot. Shirt is distinctively cream.

http://blackforests.com/gallery/POAPromos/17poapic76 << Harry approaching the Hippogryff. Shirt is distinctly white.

These two pictures illustrate one of the big debates on this costume, and a dilema you must decide on. Although the shirts look very cream in photographs, in the movie they turn out white. Are they different shirts? Actually, no. It's an old movie trick. White doesn't look good on film at all. Moviemakers try to avoid white at all costs, because it sinks in and looks drab. Instead, when they need something to look white, they tint it with a slight color: cream, light green, light blue, etc. You don't notice this on-screen, but if you saw the costume in real life it would be very apparent. For your costume, you can decide to make one of two versions. You can make the true-to-set version with the cream shirt, or the tru-to-the-vision version that has the white shirt. Which is more correct? Niether. That's like asking if Chocolate ice cream is more correct than Strawberry. It's just a different approach to the costume.

You can see that the right side of the shirt is plain, with no seams, and the right side has a single pocket with no flap. You can't see a button on the pocket in this picture, either.

Note that your shirt should be mostly cotton or rayon for this to work. If it has too much polyester in it the dye won't take as well.

Ties

Research

http://dan-radcliffe.net/gallery/details.php?image_id=1607&sessionid=4c646e54b85d3fd3319d9b700ed75c81 << Gryffindors before the Boggart lesson. Has a great view of quite a few Gryffindor ties. Ties are striped with thin stripes of the house metal (gold) on the house color (red). All are tied in a half-Windsor knot.

http://dan-radcliffe.net/gallery/details.php?image_id=1497&sessionid=4c646e54b85d3fd3319d9b700ed75c81 <<Harry with Buckbeak. Shows the tie fabric very well. It is primarily a dark red or burgundy color with two thick gold stripes, a thick burgundy stripe, then a narrow gold stripe.

http://dan-radcliffe.net/gallery/details.php?image_id=1518&sessionid=4c646e54b85d3fd3319d9b700ed75c81 << Draco with his Monster Book of Monsters. You can see that Draco's tie is the same as the Gryffindor ties, with stripes of the house metal on a base tie of the house color. The thin end of his tie sticks out of the bottom of his sweater. On the right there is another Slytherin who wears his tie very loose and dangling.

Tie Them

So you have this nifty new tie but can't figure out how to tie it? We can help! Check out these links:

Tie a NeckTie
How to Tie a Necktie
Neckties.com

Be sure and keep your character in mind when you tie your tie. A four-in-hand knot is a very general knot, and it slips for easy on-and-off. Great for the Weasley twins, who are laid back and fun-loving, or Neville, who may not remember how to tie his own tie. All of the movie ties were tied this way, probably because it's quick and slips easily on and off all 100+ extras. It also has that long tail that sticks out the bottom of sweaters, which makes it more adjustable to a larger neck. A Windsor (aka Double Windsor), or half-Windsor, however, is a more complicated knot. When done correctly, though, it gives a very polished, high-brow finish. Justin Finch-Fletchley most definately learned a half-Windsor knot from his father; a left-handed half-Windsor is a very common prep-school knot. Draco and Hermione would probably wear a Windsor or half-Windsor, too; with Draco it increases his status, with Hermione it shows off her more buttoned-up character.

The differences in the knots among the characters is mostly care in making the knot and tightening. A loose four-in-hand knot will look like a triangle, but will be cocked to one side or the other. A tight four-in-hand knot will be centered, but it looks like a rectangle. A half-Windsor is a tight triangle that doesn't cock to one side or the other, and a Windsor has a larger knot than a half-Windsor, even when tightened. There is a fourth knot, a Pratt (aka Shelby) knot, but my resident expert (my boyfriend) says it's difficult to tie and hardly ever worn, so if you want to learn about that one, check out the tutorial at Neckties.com and do some research on your own.

Cloaks

Research

http://blackforests.com/gallery/Officially/triooncastlesteps << Trio on the steps of Hogwarts. Cloaks are a heavy black wool, and appear to be 1/2 circles, for they lay very open at the front and I can't see a seam on Hermione's shoulder that would indicate a more fitted style. All raw edges were bound in black bias tape and the hem was sewn up invisibly, then the sides were tacked in. It is impossible to tell in this shot whether the cloak has a collar or not, but I'll bet they don't, just like the SS/PS ones.

You can see all three of them wearing the scarves, which are a solid color of the house color with smaller bands of the house metal. They are quite wide, and are worn folded in half (see Ron). The ends are finished with a short fringe (see Harry).
